One quick way to gather a crowd is to blame the ills of the world on a scapegoat. Sadly, some churches have grown large by doing so. Some blame the Poor. But our congregation has many poor people. Others prefer to blame the Rich. Our congregation has rich people too. Frequently, the finger is pointed at Lawyers… Our church has plenty of those as well. The blame is often placed on Politicians… They’re here - the ones from your party, and from the opposition. They might blame previous generations, or the up-and-coming ones. Either way, you’ll find them in our pews. We don’t waste time on blame; we’re too busy celebrating the good in the world and working to serve people in need. If you are looking for a community of people who would rather join hands than point fingers, you’ll always be welcome here. We’ll save you a seat.

Here's a message from our own Jim Powell, about the rummage sale at the church THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY: "This Friday and Saturday, April 26 & 27 there will be a massive rummage/yard sale at First Presbyterian Church. All of Judy's wardrobe (for the second best dressed lady in Anchorage) will be offered there, including dozens of suits, slacks, dresses, shoes, etc. There must be many 10’s of thousands of dollars of Pendleton suits and apparel. By my count, there were 44 slacks, 41 blouses, 27 blazers, 17 full length dresses, 10 sweaters, 17 skirts, 3 Hawaiian shirts and 8 long Hawaiian dresses, etc. You may recall our pre-nuptial agreement – Judy agreed not to ask where the money came from, and I would not ask where it went. Now I know where a lot of it went! Some items still have the tags on them from the store. And there are lots of items brought by others in the community. Tons of children’s toys and stuffed animals. You've really got to come and join the party. It's for a good cause, and just full of bargains. Anyway, the sale will be from 9 to 5 on Friday, and 9 to 3 on Saturday. I will be there throughout the days, so at least stop by to say hello!"

Excerpt from this coming Sunday's sermon: "We cannot leave the church to those who would turn it into a tool of oppression and abuse. We have been ENTRUSTED with this powerful institution to use it to fill the world with love and safety and grace and faith and HOPE."
Pondering for the April 7th sermon:
You are invited to join us for the Ash Wednesday service this Wednesday, March 6th from 5:30 to 6:00 pm. We will have scripture, a brief homily, music from the choir, and the imposition of the ashes. We hope you can join us!
Let me break it down for you:
Here's my sermon title this week:
Ben Brady, Pam and Carl's son, passed away last week. A memorial to remember his kindness, loyalty and love will be held at 3 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 8 at First Presbyterian Church, 616 West 10th Avenue in Anchorage. He is at peace at last. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the 501(c) 3 Non-Profit Organization - Real About Addiction, P.O. Box 241372, Anchorage, AK 99517.
The sermon this week will touch on "toxic masculinity" (among other things) and the sin of conflating aggression with strength, and gentleness with weakness. Churches have been complicit in this, despite worshiping a messiah who is described as gentle, peaceful, and meek. I considered showing this Gillette commercial, but will instead just describe parts of it... I don't like showing commercials in the service, and I'm wary of the viral. But the topic is deep and wide, and I had chosen it months ago as the topic for this Sunday. Hope you can join us! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koPmuEyP3a0&t=5s
We're very proud of our own Nina Geist (9 years old), who made origami cranes and sold them in an effort to support peace-building communities. The Presbyterian Mission Agency wrote up a piece about her: https://www.presbyterianmission.org/story/and-a-little-child-shall-lead-them/
